Study Notes on The Character of God
The Uniqueness of God To His People

A)  God is God

To whom will you compare God?

“For I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me” Isaiah 46:9

And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” Exodus 3:14

“Left to ourselves, we tend to immediately reduce God to manageable terms. We want to get him where we can use Him, or at least know where He is when we need Him. We want a God we can in some measure control” A. W. Towser

Who else has created a universe?

“By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” Hebrews 11:3

“Science observes how the power of God operates, discovers a regular pattern somewhere and fixes it as a ‘law’. The uniformity of God’s activities in His creation enables the scientist to predict the course of natural phenomena” A. W. Towser

Who else sustains the entire universe?

“When I said, ‘This far you may come, but no farther, And here your proud waves must stop!’ Have you commanded the morning since your days began, And caused the dawn to know its place,” Job 38:11,12

“Can you hunt the prey for the lion, Or satisfy the appetite of the young lions, when they crouch in their dens, Or lurk in their lairs to lie in wait? Who provides food for the raven, when its young ones cry to God, And wander about for lack of food?” Job 38:39 – 41

Who else is sovereign over this creation?

“He removes kings and raises up kings; He gives wisdom to the wise And knowledge to those who have understanding.” Daniel 2:21

“In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will” Ephesians 1:11

Who else is holy?

  • To the rich young ruler

“So Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good but One, that is, God.” Luke 18:19

  • God is morally perfect

“God is not a man, that He should lie” Numbers 23:19

“He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He” Deuteronomy 32:4

Who else is eternal?

And understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me. Isaiah 43:10

“Time marks the beginning of created existence, and because God never began to exist, it can have no application to Him.” A. W. Towser

There are mainly attributes of God:

  • Self-existence: He has no beginning
  • Self-sufficiency: He has life in Himself: all other life derives from Him
  • He is Infinite, infinitely wise, knows all, never changes, is all powerful
  • He is faithful, good, just, merciful, gracious

But one attribute above all defines how He relates to His people:

“Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” 1 John 4:8

B) God is Love

If I come to God, how will He act toward me? What kind of character does he have? What will I find Him to be like?

Who else has loved you enough to die for you?

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” John 15:3

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

God rejoices and delights over His people:

“The Lord your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing.” Zephaniah 3:17

Because He is eternal His love has no beginning and can have no end, because He is infinite His love has no limit, because He is holy His love is pure, because He is immense His love is an incomprehensibly vast, bottomless, shoreless sea before which we knee in joyful silence.

God is committed to His people:

“For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” Hebrews 13:5

“Therefore know that the LORD your God, He is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and mercy for a thousand generations with those who love Him and keep His commandments;” Deuteronomy 7:9

God does not hold out on His people:

“For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD will give grace and glory; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.” Psalm 84:11

“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” Jeremiah 29:11

Nothing can separate us from God’s love

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? … For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8:35 ,38,39

God’s love for His people will never end:

“The LORD has appeared of old to me, saying: “Yes, I have loved you with an everlasting love; Therefore with lovingkindness I have drawn you.”  Jeremiah 31:3

C) Do you Want To Know God?

The focal point of man’s interest is now himself. Humanism in its various forms is now seen as the key to understanding life.

“To know God is at once the easiest and most difficult thing in the world. It is easy because the knowledge is not won by hard mental toil, but is something given freely … But this knowledge is difficult because there are conditions to be met and the obstinate nature of fallen man does not take kindly to them.” A. W. Towser

1) We must leave our sins behind

““Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” Matthew 5:8

2) We must seek God

“And I tell you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Luke 8:9,10

We are on this earth for a season – let us faithfully represent God to a watching world!
